can nicotine treat depression?

1 doctor answer
Dr. Barbara Lavi
34 years experience Clinical Psychology
No: if nicotine could treat depression we would have a lot more smokers. People who are addicted to nicotine may think that having a cigarette calms their nerves, but it does not. It simply stops their withdrawal symptoms and cravings for a brief period of time, followed by the addictive cycle recurring. For depression, psychotherapy and psychotropic meds (if necessary) are the treatments of choice.
