Yes: Like any other foreign agent (bacteria or virus) that is introduced into your body, your immune system and bacterial load determine whether or not you actually acquire the infection. In addition, the white blood cells are mobilized to the infection by your immune system and depending on "resistance" will stop the infection or not.

Yes: If by BV you mean bacterial vaginosis, yes. This is an overgrowth of one or more types of bacteria that are normally in the vagina, but whose growth has gone unchecked due to change in conditions in the vagina. Diagnosis is made on pelvic exam & treatment w/ an antibiotic to reduce the growth of the unchecked bacteria and return normal balance of bacteria, yeasts and other organisms in vagina.

Bacterial vaginosis: This is a term used to describe a persistent low grade vaginal infection and odor. Certain common bacteria can cause this, but so can some bacteria acquired by sexual contact. See your healthcare provider to get cultures and treatment. Your partner should also be checked and possibly treated, especially if he or you are not monogamous.

Possibly: As the other physicians have already mentioned, bacterial vaginosis occurs when "bad bacteria" outnumber the "good bacteria" that normally are present in the vagina.Certain cells and antibodies (mainly of the IgA class) help protect the vagina. However, douching, wiping from the anus to the vagina after bowel movements and multiple sex partners are all factors that increase BV.
