Be clear w/in: yourself about how much time you will spend w/friend when manic. If not, he will run your schedule and your day. You can give him 1/2 hour, for example, when he's like that and then have him entertain himself until later. You can tell him this beforehand. Sounds like he is being treated professionally. If not, provide a referral. Peace and good health.

Basics.: Try to get your acquaintance to sleep an extra hour at night and to take a nap prn. Feed them a really bland diet weighted towards proteins. Stay away from preservatives, food coloring and sugar. The bi-polar brain is five times more likely to experience extreme shifts when sleep deprived and fed a diet with the big three bad things... Lastly, consider CBD's.
