Hereditary?: Is the question about hereditary macular degeneration? Macular degeneration may be hereditary in some families, so if one person has it, the others can go get eye exams also. The actual cause is not known, but unhealthy situations like smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, and high cholesterol are believed to increase one's risk of getting macular degeneration. Eye doctors have some treatments.
