Back pain: Rest. When you take a breath it increases your pressure inside your abdomen and can cause your back to hurt. Likely you irritated it during some activity. Your are of an age though that a bulging disc is common and this could be a contributing factor. I would anticipate that this will resolve in a day or so. If not get checked.

Give it time: Low back pain usually improves within 1-2 weeks, but it depends on the circumstances. If your pain has persisted for greater than 1-2 weeks despite conservative management i would see your physician. You would also want to see your physician sooner if you have any fever, chills, night sweats, or bowel/bladder changes.

Muscle spasm: Start yoga and swimming. Perhaps you have been an extreme sports enthusiast (skateboarding is the worst) and fallen repeatedly onto your buttock. If this is the case go to my chronic pain board at quora.Com (free) to learn more. An osteopath would be a good person to diagnose your problem.
