There are multiple: layers the the cornea. Each with its own distinctive property of function as well as healing ability. The innermost layer (endothelium) can be transplanted alone. The outermost layer regenerates very quickly (~24-48h) while the stroma (middle layer) can remodel itself but if optical clarity is lost may need to be transplanted. Please consult your corneal specialist.
