Neurosurgery 35 years experience
Hydrocephalus : Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts are remarkably durable six weeks after implantation. Thereafter, the risk of malfunction is 1%/year and the silicone tubing and valve can last 25 years. The VP shunts are self-sufficient and no maintenance is required. Valve adjustments may be necessary from time to time but this is infrequent too.
