i have a sprained ankle. should i go to the er right away to get it checked or stay home and apply rice? there was no fall or impact causing this.

Tricky: Without an actual examination, I cannot give specific medical advice on your particular health, and I've seen fractures be a surprise. Free standing emergency clinics are another option. Mostly Elevation, ice, compression, etc. works

See your doctor: Dan, if you didn't injure it, it might not be a sprain. Some sort of inflammatory arthritis like gout is possible. Far more worrisome would be septic arthritis (joint infection). See your doctor and get it examined. Hope this helps!

Monitor: You can use ice , rest, and OTC motrin if you have no allergies or contraindications to it ( like ulcer/gastritis or chronic renal problems), or if you take blood thinning medications. If you have other medical problems or you take other medications , double check with the pharmacist for interactions. If is not getting better in a couple of days, see your PCP.
