No quick cure: Canker sores are caused by a virus and take time to heal. This takes typically 7-10 days to run its course. Usually when you notice the cold sore the virus has been going for 3 days as its caused by a virus antibiotics dont help. Best treatment is to place an antiviral ointment (prescription needed) on the cold sore and avoid licking or touching it during the healing period.

Many?: Since we do not know what causes canker sores, the remedies are many. One approach is to apply a topical broad-spectrum antibiotic a few times a day. Another home remedy is to apply table salt on the sore itself but do realize this may hurt a bit. I am sure there are many other remedies but none has been scientifically proven.
