Endemic: Polio is widely endemic in india. It is one of a handful of places with many cases of polio. The world is trying to eradicate polio so the drops immunization will treat individuals but also the community by a concept called "herd immunity".

Better Compliance: Over the years the oral polio vaccine has been found to be much easier to administer to large populations. This is due to normal fear of the shots. There are more side effects and increased cost, but more people are protected.
Dr. James Ferguson

Extra benefits: The oral polio vaccine is actually easier to administer (no shot) and quicker (thousands in a few hours). It also has a gross but potentially important community benefit. The person receiving the OPV will shed living virus in their poo for weeks. There is some chance that unvaccinated person will acquire the vaccine virus and become vaccinated, just from poor hygienic practices.(Exposed to poo)
