Do ALS patients suffer painful, suffocating death?

Dr. Ed Friedlander
Pathology 44 years experience
Sometimes: An ALS person is more likely to die of pneumonia -- which a wise physician / family would not seek to treat. Very weak people cannot protect their lungs from bacterial infection by coughing and breathing deeply. This is far less frightening than death purely from weakness, which actually would be slow suffocation.

Further, if you are walking around with untreated tuberculosis, you are putting your neighbors at risk. And you may be breaking the law. If you have any concerns about treatment, talk to somebody you trust. I am a TB survivor -- 18 months of medication saved my life and made me feel great once again. I hope you will join the club!

Can people die from alzheimer's disease?

2 doctor answers16 doctors weighed in
Dr. Keegan Duchicela
Family Medicine 14 years experience
Yes.: In the late stages of alzheimer's disease the body's vital functions break down. The body "forgets" how to swallow, the muscles grow rigid. The person starts to aspirate, they develop pneumonias, pressure ulcers and other infections that eventually kills them. It's important for patients and their families to talk with their doctor about an advanced directive before that happens.

What does "valium 5mg IV q2h prn agitation" mean?

1 doctor answer3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Pamela Pappas
Psychiatry 42 years experience
IV Valium: Valium is a benzodiazepine medicine which can calm anxiety and agitation. "iv" denotes giving it intravenously -- i assume this patient is in the hospital or other medical unit. In this case, the person may be given 5mg of valium IV every 2 hours if agitated -- but the "prn" means it's only used "as needed" rather than around the clock.
