Combine them.: No downfalls. Combine weight training with cardiovascular exercise for a complete and effective exercise program.

Are there any cons to strength training compared to aerobic exercise?

Do both: Ideally you should be doing both, since strength training will maintain muscle mass, while aerobic exercise maintains cardiovascular health. Only doing one or the other would miss out on the benefits of each one.
