Lab work: Ask your doctor for lab work. There are 3 ways to diagnose pre-diabetes. You need two positive tests to confirm the diagnosis: fasting sugar (prediabetic= 100-125 mmol/dl), 2 hr oral glucose tolerance test (2 hr sugar 140-199 mmol/dl) or hemoglobin A1c (pre-diabetic a1c= 5.7-6.4%).

Fasting blood sugar : The easiest way to know if you have pre-diabetes is by testing your blood glucose. A fasting blood glucose between 100 and 125 is considered pre diabetes.

Yes: Unlike type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetics might not have any physical signs or symptoms. That's why it's important to get your blood tested if you are an "at risk" population: family history of diabetes, obese/overweight, age > 45 or high risk race: african-american, native american, latinos, Asian american/pacific islanders.

Reversibility: This is the best time for you to make lifestyle changes to reverse the course of sugar abnormalities. If you make the right changes, you can go back to normal and not progress to diabetes.
