what exactly causes irritable bowel syndrome?

A syndrome complex: Stress, emotions, conditioning, psychologic traits, bacteria contribute to development of ibs. Brainstem reflexes induced by eating are sometimes exaggerated in ibs. Gut tone & sensation, as well as GI transit, are influenced by hormones & neurotransmitters. In ibs patients alteration in brain-gut pathways can affect perception of bowel distension, cause painful spasm, & modify transit of food.

Autonomic Disorder: Cause unknown, many speculations. My own observations indicate that excess pelvic parasympathetic nerve stimulation leads to irritable bowel symptoms. See my complete discussion on my chronic pain board at quora.Com.

Two ways to look at: A functional, but not structural, disorder like ibs: "brain-gut response to stress and cholinergic stimulation in ibs" published in the journal of clinical gastroenterology in 1993 or: "the sorrow which has no vent in tears may make other organs weep." henry maudsley.

Who told you that ?: The american academy of pediatrics & many other advisory groups have promoted sleeping on a babies back since the early 90's. Since that time we have seen a 40-50% drop in crib death over that period. I know of no one that advises belly sleeping for any reason, although if baby rolls into that position after 6m i don't try to change it. Tummy time while awake can help build upper body strength.

May be normal but: You need to get checked by your doctor. There are lots of possible causes for galactorrhea (leaving milky fluid) and most are easy to deal with. Bottom line - go get a checkup! good luck.
