Herniated disc: A herniated thoracic disc, a nerve sheath tumor, or an inflamed rib head can cause the symptoms that you describe. The early phase of a shingles outbreak can be the source of pain. Rarely an aortic thoracic aneurysm or dissection will be the cause of pain. An MRI of the thoracic spine will determine if the pain is due to a herniated disc.
