How can I determine which training or exercise is best suited to me?

Dr. Judy Ortonanswered

Depends on your goal: Make a list of what you enjoy doing for exercise and what your goals are. Goals would include fitness, healthier lifestyle, better sleep, improved mental alertness, weight loss, running a marathon or triatholon, etc. You also need to consider your current physical health. See your physician for a general physical. Do so with goals and ideas in hand to develop the first steps in your program.

A 26-year-old male asked:
What is the best way to motivate myself to exercise in the morning?
2 doctor answers • 6 doctors weighed in

Dr. Robert Kwokanswered

Varies for everybody: Motivations are very individualized. Some people do better if they have an exercise partner. Others do better with numerical goals, such as pounds lost, pounds bench-pressed, miles run per week, etc... Some people bargain with themselves, such as allowing themselves to see a movie or buy a new shirt, if they've exercised a certain number of days.

Any: You are in this for the long haul so choose any machine that you think you can use for the rest of your life, that is, anything that you can tolerate. In general, machine that keeps pressure off your joints are better tolerated: elliptical, water treadmill...

A 32-year-old member asked:
What is the best exercise / sport / activity to do?
2 doctor answers • 3 doctors weighed in

Dr. Janet Greenhutanswered
Preventive Medicine 43 years experience
The ones you like: The best exercise you can do is the one you enjoy and will keep doing. A lot of people start exercise programs but drop off. If you like what you're doing and feel good while you're doing it and afterward, you're more likely to stick with it. National guidelines recommend 150 min/wk of moderate or 75 min/wk of vigorous activity and resistance training twice a week.
