Clarify: Hi. What do you mean a BLOOD test showed urine protein? Please clarify. My guess is a urine test showed increased urinary protein excretion. That's a sign of diabetic kidney disease, and a clear indication to TIGHTLY control diabetes and blood pressure. Proteinuria occurs prior to a bump in serum creatinine in diabetic kidney disease, and you may bring it way back toward normal with tight DM & BP.

If you have t1dm: and are leading protein into your urine at such an early age, it's most often due to poor control of blood pressure or blood sugar - or both. A very high protein diet can also make it worse. Check w/your doctor about ACE inhibitors or ARB therapy which may help decrease your protein excretion and keep it for worsening. This is a totally separate problem from kidney blood tests.
