A 32-year-old male asked:
if i have had diarrhea for 7 days after drinking raw milk, are there long term health consequences i should watch out for?

Oh my, YES!: Raw milk can harbor dangerous microorganisms (such as Salmonella, E. coli, & Listeria) that can pose serious health risks. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) report unpasteurized milk is 150 times more likely to cause foodborne illness & result in 13 times more hospitalizations than illnesses involving pasteurized dairy products. No loss of nutrition with Pasteurization--why chance it!

I have had diarrhea for five days now and been taking over-the-counter medicine but it's not helping. When should I contact my dr?

Diarrhea: Ok first avoid the anti diarrhea medications such as immodium. They can make the diarrhea last longer. Use a brat diet (banana, rice, apple sauce tea, toast). Avoid dairy products as some infections cause short term lactose intolerance. Reasons to contact an md are blood in stool or dizziness that can suggest dehydration.

Hydration: Diarrhea ongoing for beyond a week needs to be investigated for treatable causes, which can be few. Use electrolyte solution like ricelyte or pedialyte, avoid sugar and dairy products. Rice based foods and yogurts would also be helpful.
