when going for a pouch surgery with ulcerative colitis what's the percentage of the pouch not failing and for it to work at the end of al surgeries?

Depends on team: A pouch also called ileorectal "J" pouch. Goal is to have your rectum working, no UC issues, and to connect the ileum to the rectum. This is usually staged; have ileostomy for a time, get UC under control after subtotal colon removal and then when in good health go for the pouch. Benefit of pouch, NO BAG and able to use restroom close to normal. Seek colorectal surgeon at big center/University.

Dr. Addagada Rao answered

Depends : After colon is removed , has to wear a stomal bag on abdomen , need frequent change of bags few times a day, by creating a pouch , stool will be evacuated once a day or so. This needs special skills & ability , elderly , handicapped , mental illness and people with neurological problems will not be able evacuate the pouch, so they are not suitable for creation of the pouch.

A 29-year-old female asked:
Y cnt pouch surgery b suitable for al ulcerative colitis patients what's the main reasons?

Discuss surgery: For ulcerative colitis surgery options talk to a surgeon. Removal of the entire colon with colostomy is one option. This removes the colon but you have a colostomy. Reconstruction of a colon after the ulcerative colitis is why you want to spend time discussing all options and what to expect. For some patients you may expect to have 4-6 bm's daily after reconstruction.

A 41-year-old member asked:
Can you tell me about ulcerative colitis and the "j"pouch operation. It has been told to me my only remedy?

Dr. John Fung answered

Not only remedy: When ulcerative colitis causes chronic problems and not treatable by standard medications, the removal of the entire colon is usually recommended. This will leave the patient with either an ostomy (referred to as a "bag") or a pouch can be created and connected to the anus (called a continence procedure). The latter has potential problems, but many young patients prefer than to a bag.
