having some what heavy head, neck and ear pain on right side for a few days. a doctor diagnosed it as tmj due to stress. could this be anything else?

Yes, other possible : diagnoses include ear infection (outer or inner), sinusitis, tooth abscess, peritonsilar abscess, Ramsy-Hunt syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, atypical migraine. I would certainly recommend getting re-examined, especially if there is skin sensitivity, changes in your vision, congestion, or fever.

Yes: Yes, Could be a problem with any of the anatimical structures in the area. Start with evaluation by a TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
