Size, sun, and smoke: The three main causes of loose skin (besides the normal loosening that comes with aging) are changing size, smoking tobacco, and sun (or tanning bed) exposure. Weight gain and then loss, especially after 35 or so, results in loose skin as the weight gain stretched it and then it remains somewhat loose after weight loss. Nicotine and ultra violet light destroy the elasticity of the skin
