Can you tell me how is the experience of getting wisdom teeth pulled out?

Dr. Jeffrey Gitelman
Specializes in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
A-Z: Should not be traumatic-can be done awake or with an IV anesthetic. Should be done by a board certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. Also some patients will complain no matter what transpires.
Dr. Tarek Hamid
Dentistry 9 years experience
Painlessly: It should be a very painless ,comfortable experience with mild post operative discomfort that can be treated with mild pain meds
Dr. Paul Grin
Pain Management 36 years experience
Pain less: In many cases wisdom teeth should be extracted due to complications associated with the presence of tooth decay. It is a common procedure, generally performed under local anesthesia, intravenous (IV) sedation, or general anesthesia by a specially trained dentist or oral surgeon. Often extracting a wisdom tooth is the best solution. See your dentist for x-ray and evaluation.

Maybe nothing: Can't give you accurate advice since this question needs to be answered after radiographs have been taken and your specific situation evaluated. Seek the advice of a local dentist.

What is the recovery time for getting wisdom teeth pulled out?

Dr. Jeffrey Bassman

Depends: It is a surgery. The recovery time can be affected by many variables- upper teeth or lower, impacted/partial impaction/fully erupted, infected or not, root tip or broken tooth, difficulty of removal, density of the bone, your overall immunity. Normally a week to 10 days is a good rule of thumb, but everyone is different and every extraction is different.

The time can vary: It all is predicated on the condition of the wisdom teeth. Are they full bony impactions, partial bony impactions, erupted, position of the teeth with in the bone, etc. In addition are they going to be removed under general anesthesia, IV sedation, or just a local anesthetic. As you can see there are many variations and they can take various amount of time depending upon the skill of the surgeon.

When should you get wisdom teeth pulled out?

Dr. Daniel Quon
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 42 years experience
Ideally: Most surgeons prefer to remove wisdom teeth before the roots are fully developed, which typically is during the teenage years. If you are having a problem with any wisdom tooth that is deemed non-restorable, non-functional, causing or contributing to a problem, it should be removed asap, provided there are not contraindications for you to undergo the surgical procedure.
A 34-year-old member asked:

Please tell me, are you supposed to pull your wisdom teeth?

3 doctor answers4 doctors weighed in
Dr. Stephen Gordon
Dentistry 43 years experience
Only if .....: Your wisdom teeth are in poor position, heavily decayed or are causing problems with adjacent teeth. Pre-historic humans typically had a longer jaw that could accommodate 3rd molars but today, most people do not have enough room for them so they need to be removed. See your dentist or oral surgeon for evaluation.
