A 50-year-old member asked:

how can people die when in comas?

Please clarify: Are you asking, "When people in comas die, what do they die of?" Or do you mean, "I don't understand why people in comas die instead of everyone getting better, waking up, shaking their doctor's hand, waving to the nurses, and going home."? Please repost your question so that it can be understood.

Can childbirth cause maternal death?

Dr. Megan Bird
Obstetrics and Gynecology 19 years experience
Yes: Unfortunately, childbirth can still cause death. This is usually from bleeding, general anesthesia or stroke. Your best bet to reduce this risk is to start your pregnancy healthy. Eat a balanced diet, exercise and control any medical problems you do have. Nothing can take the risk to zero but you would be surprised how much you can do!

How can I tell if the nits are dead or alive?

Crack them: Live nits will pop if cracked between the nails, whereas dead ones won't and can be picked.

Do people die from cfs?

2 doctor answers8 doctors weighed in
Dr. Ed Friedlander
Pathology 44 years experience
Probably not: Unlike many other physicians, i believe that chronic fatigue syndrome is real, and an immune disturbance due to some unknown virus or viruses. However, if people were dying of it, we'd almost certainly recognize some characteristic lesion. If you have cfs, good luck -- it generally remits after a while, and low-dose antidepressants and/or simply practicing new life skills seems to help some.

Do people die from myositis?

2 doctor answers4 doctors weighed in
Dr. Ed Friedlander
Pathology 44 years experience
Depends on type: Polymyositis / dermatomyositis kill only if they produce extreme weakness that compromises breathing or results in skin damage, or if the heart muscle is involved or (as often happens) the disease also causes fibrosis of the lungs. Other forms of myositis are even less likely to kill. Your physician can tell you what your diagnosis means to you.

Need to know what's childbirth coma?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. William Goldie
Pediatric Neurology 48 years experience
Horrible: During childbirth several horrible things can occur to the mother and to the child. Unclear from the question to whom you are referring. Coma of the mother can be caused by intracranial hemorrhage, anoxic damage, severe eclampsia, pituitary apoplexy, etc. In the baby it can be caused by hie (hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy). Recovery depends on cause and degree of damage.
