Ok to have surgery: Long ago, we used to think that a hernia was a possible sign of colon cancer, presumably from straining. Nowadays, we know that is not true, and there is no need for routine colonoscopy before hernia repair. If there is another issue with the colon, it may be warranted. Hope this helps! Colonoscopy is safe: Colonoscopy is a good test to look at the insides of the colon. Risks include perforation and bleeding (if biopsies are done) Few complications occur. If your doctor recommended this study I suggest that you go ahead with it. The amount of information obtained can be valuable
