No: Dementia does not come on suddenly. More than likely, he is having reaction to a medication, an infection, or a stroke. He should be taken to ER as soon as possible to be checked? Good luck!

Delerium: Dementia does not occur over night. Your dad might have some degree of sub clinical cognitive decline due to a mild degenerative condition and then something else has caused an acute clinical set back. Most often this is due to an infection somewhere like a UTI. Other conditions include stroke, CNS infection, renal insufficiency and medication interactions.
