IBS: should be a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning you need testing to rule out other causes of your symptoms and only if they are all negative, should you be given the diagnosis of IBS. See a gastrenterologist

IBS is a diagnosis : Of exclusion. A detailed GI workup is required to rule out other serious diseases before being diagnosed as having ibs. There is no specific blood work. Please contact a GI doctor.

IBS symptoms...: Ibs comes in variable forms: diarrhea predominant, constipation predominant and alternating type (diarrhea and constipation). All are associated with abdominal bloating and abdominal pain with onset of symptoms. Having a stool typically relieves the symptoms - temporarily. See you doctor if concerned. Good luck!

What should I do to stop irritable bowel syndrome?

Diet and fluids: I rarely prescribe meds for ibs. In my experience teaching people to eat and drink properly resolves most if not all symptoms when the patient is compliant and follows through. Hi fiber, 80-100 ounces non caffeine, non alcoholic beverages each day, regular meal times, excercise. Consistency is the key to being symptom free.

Maybe not IBS: The key to your answer: what symptoms, duration of distress, & recent evaluation. If you are awakening from sleep due to pain, your symptoms don't come & go (are unchanging & ever present or are actually worsening), there's bleeding/fever then it is unlikely you have irritable bowel syndrome. In such a case, further evaluation is warranted rather than you just taking symptom-based medicine.

Diet and fluids: And pro-biotics seem to help if patient is compliant. Eat a high fiber diet, regular meal times and similar portions and drink 80-100 oz of caffeine free, alcohol free fluid daily.
