Usually, better...: You would expect to urinate with a better flow than before if you're able to void some with slow urine flow. This is the most common scenario after TURP. But, if residual urine is high, say, 450 cc or having urinary retention up to 1000-2500 cc, such men wouldn't void well, and even still never yet. So, it is said: Intervene at a reasonable time in a reasonable way to a reasonable person.

How can you get bladder cancer if you're constantly urinating?

Dr. Simon Kimm

In other ways.: The development of bladder cancer has little to do with the frequency of urination. It has everything to do with changes to the lining of the bladder, mostly due to exposure to toxins in the urine, such as from cigarette smoke & industrial chemicals. Inherited genetic factors play a role as well. For those that have developed bladder cancer, one of the symptoms can be frequent urination.

Tools for assessment: A voiding diary, or bladder diary, is a way to relate fluid intake with voiding behavior. It is usually performed over 24 or 48 hours, and the time and amount fluids are taken, the time and amount of voids, and any episodes of leakage or symptoms are noted. Doctors use this data to find patterns and help to diagnose problems in urine storage and voiding.

A 41-year-old member asked:

Is it a problem if my doctor uses psa (protein specific antigen) tests instead of a digital rectal exam for the prostate?

1 doctor answer3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Lester Thompson
Pathology 33 years experience
No: Prostate specific antigen (not protein) is a very sensitive marker of prostate function. It very frequently will be elevated before any abnormality is detected by digital rectal exam. However, nothing beats a good clinician being able to feel something on exam. So, really, the two work together to achieve the best results.
