A 47-year-old member asked:

can you tell me what to do if i found out i have gallstones and a bad gallblader and?

Surgery: Gallbladders continue to get worse so you should seek a surgical removal. Contact a local surgeon.
Dr. Steven Watry
General Practice 20 years experience
Planning: Much better to have this surgery when the gall bladder is calm, rather than try to wait it out until the next attach. The surgery can be scheduled and will be much smoother, with less possible complications and a faster recovery. Meanwhile, avoid foods that increase your discomfort, such as red meats and fatty foods. Best Wishes, Dr. Steve

No: The gallbladder is involved with the digestion of fatty foods. The urinary bladder holds urine that has been filtered from the kidneys. The two structures are unrelated.
A 21-year-old member asked:

Can I have a tumor of the gallbladder?

Dr. Barry Rosen
General Surgery 34 years experience
Yes.: Both benign and malignant tumors can develop within the gallbladder. A tumor is often found as a polyp on ultrasound; although an overwhelming majority are benign, we recommend removing the gallbladder if the polyp is 1 CM or larger. Cancers typically present incidently during gallbladder removal or at advanced states, due to their propensity to spread to the liver.
A 22-year-old member asked:

No: The function of the gallbladder is to store and concentrate the bile that is created by the liver and secreted into your intestines. Its presence is not necessary for digestion.

A 21-year-old member asked:

Why does pregnancy increase my chance of gallstones?

2 doctor answers7 doctors weighed in
Dr. Michael Carson
Internal Medicine 29 years experience
Hormonal Effects: The gallbladder is a muscular sac that essentially squirts bile into the intestines to help digestion. The increased estrogen levels of pregnancy relax the muscle a bit, so the bile sits around more in the gallbladder. This "stagnant" bile, combined with some changes in the chemicals in bile related to pregnancy favor more stones forming than when you are not pregnant.
