Sigh breath: The purpose of the sigh breath is to increase gas gas exchange and improve lung compliance. There are several studies looking at the addition of a sigh breath. One sigh breath every 60 to 90 seconds is what i customarily order.

Dr. Jon Krook
General Surgery 24 years experience
No: When you undergo general anesthesia, you are deep enough that you would not breathe without support. The most important duty of the anesthesia team managing you is that you continue breathing. That is why they intubate you (pass a breathing tube down your trachea), place you on a ventilator, and monitor your vitals and other parameters very closely.

Is a "salt pipe" good for breathing difficulties?

1 doctor answer3 doctors weighed in
Dr. James Okamoto
Family Medicine 29 years experience
Unknown: The use of salt therapy began in Europe in the 1800s, when it was observed that Siberian salt miners had less respiratory illnesses than their peers that worked above ground. On the internet, there are thousands of testimonials and 151 "articles" on salt pipes or "halotherapy" however only one of these had "controls" and the results were inconclusive, and testimonials are not the same as evidence.

Can I buy anything that will prevent me from breathing cigarette smoke?

Dr. Joseph Roosth
Internal Medicine 35 years experience
No and Yes: Well you do not need to buy anything, but stay away from smokers and not smoke yourself. If there was something like this available, it would make someone very wealthy. Seems i read the most powerful toxic fume masks used by industrial folks working with hazardous fumes will only block about 90% of nearby cigarette smoke. Would not quote that figure.
