is a level of intensity/stress (ie. hr, sweat) an indicator of calories burned? or is there a set amount of caloric energy used for exercise (6mph)

Run eats up calories: At 6 mph, jogging should burn around 650-700 calories per hour. There are a lot of other factors which could shift this up or down. As a rule you should have a workout hr target max of 80% of the value 200-age. For you (200-28)*0.8= 138 beats/min max.
