Injury to nerves: CP results from an stable (non-progessive) injury to brain cells that are devoted to movement, muscle control & posture. The injury can be lack of nutrients (oxygen, glucose) due to blood flow problems or hemorrhage or infection (virus, parasite, bacteria). The injury can occur during pregnancy, labor, delivery or the first 3 yrs.

Brain injury: Cerebral palsy is a static encephalopathy which results in a problem with control of muscles. Children may be found to have the condition shortly after birth. Some are due to injury at birth, others due to injury in utero, many the cause is never determined. Injury to the brain after birth can result in a form of acquired cerebral palsy such as from meningitis, stroke, injury, brain surgery.

Cerebral palsy: Cerebral palsy is caused by an abnormality or disruption in brain development, usually before a child is born. Causes include: random mutations in genes, maternal infections that affect the developing fetus, lack of oxygen or blood flow to the brain, infant infections that cause inflammation in or around the brain, traumatic head injury to an infant from a motor vehicle accident, fall or abuse.

Cerebral palsy is a : group of motor impairments defined by the way they affect mobility & hand use. Genetic errors, prenatal exposure to alcohol or drugs & other factors can alter brain formation as early as 3 wks. after conception. Decreased flow of blood & oxygen to the fetal brain from maternal, placental or fetal problems can occur any time before or during birth. Trauma & infection can cause CP up to age 3 yrs.

Damage to the brain: Cerebral palsy is a term used to label a child who has a static encephalopathy. There are many different types and degrees of dysfunction that fall within that label. There are abnormalities of motor function found on neurological examination, but the child may be quite intelligent and otherwise normal. The cause is complex but involves damage to motor control areas of the brain.

Brain injury: Cerebral palsy is caused by an injury to an immature brain. Typically it occurs in a child who is born prematurely, but can occur at any point during pregnancy up to the age of 3yo. It is a nonprogressive condition, but its impact on the body may change over time. Unfortunately there is still no cure. There are some preliminary studies on stem cell therapy, but not enough info yet to recommend.
