Twisted ovary: Torsion means twisting. Very rarely, an ovary can twist about on its base. It causes very severe pain, and you would definitely seek medical help for this. The same sort of thing happens in males involving the testicle, and it is not uncommon. But in females, it is a pretty rare condition.

Here are some ...: Normally, ovaries are formed and fixed well with their broad mesentery. But, at times, such formation and fixation are not adequate so to become a dangling organ like a bell-clapper - similar to that in testicular torsion, which in turn tends to twist around its pivotal point off and on and at times never untwist by its self resulting in a clinical emergency. Possibly: Ovarian torsion occurs when the ovary twists on its blood supply. It is a surgical emergency as the blood flow needs to be restored or the ovary will die. If it was your only remaining ovary, that would cause sterility.

Possible but..: Possibly, an ovarian may twist with its recurrent spontaneous untwisting, similar to that scenario in testes. But, testicular torsion with recurrent spontaneous detorsion is somewhat easier to assess than the ovarian counterpart. However, professional alertness + timely analysis the detailed Hx of onset, degree, duration, and interval of pain remain the key to suspecting its Dx.

May be...: A twisted ovary may untwist itself just like that happening to testicles. Its diagnosis is hard, but largely based on doc's alert and professional keenness to reveal its unique clinical pictures: highly variable onset, intensity, duration, and interval, of recurrent pain over time, usually years; of course, one has to rule out common intrapelvic disorders. So, see and ask doc timely. Good luck...

An unbalanced ovary: Often times if an ovary or fallopian tube are unbalanced due to a cyst in either structure, the ovary or tube can twist on its blood supply, causing ovarian torsion. This can be detected with a pelvic ultrasound. Ovarian torsion usually occurs with abdominal and pelvic pain.
