A 42-year-old member asked:
i feel like my heart skipped a beat?

Palpitation: An occasional skipped beat can be normal, as in athletes. If there are more than a few beats per minute a visit to your doctor would be appropriate. Also if you have any sense of dizziness associated with the skipped beats. Though the condition may be intermittent, still a doctor visit would be the best plan

It is normal: It is normal for our blood pressure to drop and our heart beat to increase when we get up from sitting position . The change should not be more than expected in physiologic change to adjust for positional change . A condition called orthostatic hypotension where by blood pressure drops by >15 and heart rate increases by >20. If that is the case , it indicate dehydration , medications and others

Heart skipped a beat when playing basketball, should I be concerned?

No: A single 'skipped beat' is usually not harmful. This sensation is caused by a single premature beat. Monitor them. I would not worry about it unless they become very frequent or cause symptoms of shortness of breath, chest pain, or lightheadedness.

A 37-year-old member asked:
Can you tell me what to do if for a few years my heart has skipped a beat?

Dr. Bennett Werner answered

Yes: MissButters, everyone's heart skips a beat now and then. If you find it bothersome, an evaluation should be done which may lead to a recommendation for medication. If it's just something you notice from time to time and were asking if it's a problem, I'd say "forget it."

Probably ok: You should have your electrolytes checked - sweating in the hot sun, playing a sport often causes low potassium which causes skipped beats.

Mvp and mild mr. Everytime I eat,do mild exertion or laugh out loud for a long period, I get out of breath and my heart pounds and geta crazy fast. Y?

Dr. Robert Pearson-Martinez answered
Pediatric Cardiology 20 years experience
Could be related: MVP & mild MR usually don't produce any symptoms. However, MVP can sometimes cause palpitations or chest pain. You should see your MD for an evaluation. A Holter monitor will be helpful to follow the rhythm for 24 hours, but counting your heart rate during the episodes can also be helpful. Even if there is no real arrhythmia, MVP can sometimes be treated with beta blockers to relieve symptoms.
