Many do: Diabetics have complicated pregnancies. They often have difficulty controlling blood sugar. The fetus makes its own Insulin ; puts the excess sugar that is transferred across the placenta into over-sized storage areas, over-sized organs etc.All of which can make the baby heavy. Better control during pregnancy, decreases risk for baby and mom.
