You see your doc: Depending on the abnormality, usually the patient will have a colposcopy. This is a procedure where the clinician looks closely at your cervix and can biopsy any areas that look abnormal. The reason this is done is that pre-cancer or overt cancer can be identified. The reason paps are important is they can find abnormalities before they become cancer.
