Stool withholding: Associated with chronic constipation ; encopresis ( soiling ) is a both a medical ; a behavioral disorder treated by a team, often a pediatric gastroenterologist, child psychologist ; developmental/behavioral pediatrician. After a clean-out he needs a bulk laxative daily for at least 6 months to insure soft stools, bowel-re-training ; therapy for anxiety or self-esteem issues that often co-occur.

Laxatives: Stool holding is not uncommon with potty training or kids not wanting to go at school. I recommend a repeat clean out with 4-6 tablespoons of MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) mixed in a beverage or favorite food with a lot of fluids, as well as a mild stimulant such as dulcolax. Maintenance is the main thing. Give miralax, (polyethylene glycol) 1 -2 capfuls a day to keep stools really loose. Also, reward bm attempts and success. Months!
