A 34-year-old female asked:
Can gerd really be caused by low stomach acid? could be why 5+ rx's made me worse? any standard tests to find out or is it more trial and error?

Reflux: People with low stomach acid can still get reflux if they have an incompetent valve at the junction of the esophagus and stomach and eat large meals, recline after eating, are obese or eat fatty or oily meals which slow stomach emptying. If there is some acid in the stomach caffeine and chocolate may give them reflux also. An old fashioned upper GI series and barium swallow may help in diagnosis.
