Visit a psychiatrist: The first thing you should do is visit a psychiatrist so they can appropriately diagnose you. There are many psych disorders that can present with "neurotic thoughts" like generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, etc. For some of these disorders, medications may work but for others, psychological interventions may work more effectively.

CBT: I assume a mental health professional has diagnosed you correctly and recommended cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy (cbt). Aaron beck, md devised a therapeutic technique whereby one replaces problematic, maladaptive, "automatic" thoughts with logical adaptive thoughts causing changes in one's mood in a more positive and productive direction. A simple technique that requires effort but it works.

Radio Head: This is what I do: I listen to the radio with ear buds or head phones. I have a little portable and listen to talk radio with topics that interest me. Sometimes music, if it is engaging and I can really focus on it. Any time I need to get out of my own thoughts.Especially at night in bed before going to sleep so I'm not up all night thinking. Also, combining the radio with exercise helps even more
