help! need to know if there's another form of the ipecac that you can buy otc?

No: Ipecac is not available over the counter any more because it wasn't very effective and may be associated with adverse effects. There were studies showing that the amount of a substance that was removed by the use of ipecac was minimal, and did not prevent poisoning. Also, giving it to someone who may choke on the vomit was quite dangerous. See a doctor for poisonings.

It makes you vomit: Ipecac used to be a solution to overdose and eating or drinking harmful stuff, particularly by a child, or as a suicidal attempt. Ipecac, if given early, will have you throw up almost all harmful stuff. That was the reason it was used at hospital emergency room quite often. However, los of times, people aspirate the vomitus into air tube and in the lungs. That causes pneumonia, and breathing probl.

Where can you find and purchase ipecac syrup now?

Dr. Michael H. T. Sia answered

Not available...: For years, parents were told to keep ipecac syrup at home. This medicine could be used to make a child vomit after swallowing poison. Now, doctors advise not to have it on hand. Poison centers do not tell you to use it. You cannot buy ipecac in the drugstore. Call the poison center right away at 1-800-222-1222 if you think someone has been poisoned.
