seroneg: Aside from blood tests, a urine test is also recommended, and sometime stool studies if there is altered bowel habits. Imaging may also be needed depending on the details. Its important to distinguish between ankle swelling due to edema versus swelling in the ankles.

Many reasons: Swelling in the ankles could be do to slow return of blood flow by then veins or it could be slow return of the lymph. Blood pressure medications can also cause this. Things to consider for swollen ankles: avoid wearing socks with elastic at the ankles. Knee length socks/stockings with over the counter grade compression. Keeping legs elevated above heart level.
