Stroke: There are multiple costs of stroke including rupture of a cholesterol plaque blocking a blood vessel, hemorrhage usually from hypertension and vessel rupture, and small vessel disease within the brain. I don't know the specific type of stroke your mother had but it sounds like her cholesterol is likely within normal range. All of these maneuvers part to reduce the risk of stroke but there's nothing we can do to completely prevent it.

Nothing is perfect: Glad you had the blood pressure handled, as the stroke might have evolved into an hemorrhage, which leads to a 60% mortality by the end of 1 year. Many reasons for hardening of the arteries, and at age 81 not surprising that vascular event occurred. Do not see any protective anti-platelet drug such as Plavix (clopidogrel) or aggrenox, and am somewhat surprised that statin is also not on board. Ask doc?
