See MD: Very difficult to say without examining you. However, high protein intake and associated knee pain in a middle- aged male w/ no history of knee injury is suggestive of gout.See your pcp for evaluation and lab work. The best way to know 'for sure' if it is gout is to have your knee aspirated and the fluid looked at by an experienced pathologist. Uric acid crystals are classically -" birefringent"
