Lots of things: 1) genetics-- some peoples teeth move faster
2) compliance-- if you wear the rubber bands as frequently as instructed
3) amount of movement required

Growth & cooperation: Teeth move through bone faster in growing children than in non-growing adults. If your underbite is primarily Dental, Orthodontic Rx will be effective. If strong skeletal component, jaw surgery may also be needed. The better you follow instructions, the more you cooperate, the faster your treatment will progress. Your Orthodontic Specialist is trained to know the appropriate end point.
