A 43-year-old member asked:

for how long do porcelain veneers last?

Varies: Dental restorations vary in their longevity based on different factors, including how well you maintain (clean) them, frequency of professional cleanings, foods that you eat, and your bite. On average, restorations last about 10 years. Some last less, many last a whole lot more. Don't expect that they will last forever.

Need to be careful: Porcelain veneers usually have an average life span of 12-15 years. Longer is you don't abuse them with biting the wrong foods or not brushing / flossing the veneers. You need to keep them clean , as you do your regular teeth. Also avoid drinking lots of acidic drinks, like mountain dew, coca cola, pepsi. They can affect the margins or edges of the veneers.

This depends...: By not biting into hard foods, by not using the front teeth as a tool for ripping and tearing, by wearing a night guard during sleep, by performing nice oral hygiene habits, and by having the work done by a reputable dentist, veneers can last for longer than 10 years. These restorations do need maintenance and care to last.

At least 10-15 years: If diagnosed and done properly under optimal conditions, they should last at least 10-15 years. A great long term investment for an enhanced smile!

A 30-year-old member asked:

Can a dentist put a veneer over a crown?

9 doctor answers19 doctors weighed in
Dr. Jake Richards
Dentistry 12 years experience
I wouldn't: It is not easay for porcelain or composite to stick to the surface of an existing crown with out extreme heat that can not be attained in the oral cavity. Besides, the cost of the veneer is not much less than a crown so just have the crown replaced and you can have the look that you want and will last much longer.
A 48-year-old member asked:

Is there a longterm type veneer that works if gums recede?

Dr. Jake Richards
Dentistry 12 years experience
No special one: Receding gums means the root of the tooth is exposed and the root is not covered with enamel. Veneers bond best to enamel but can be bonded to dentin/root, but not as well. Talk with your dentist about the options.

Can a dentist put a veneer over an already capped tooth?

Dr. steven Present
Dentistry 43 years experience
Yes: If the porcelain on the old crown (cap) is chipped assuming there is no recurrent decay, the porcelain can be prepared, an impression is taken, the veneer is fabricated and bonded to the old crown. However, if there is a metal substructure of the old crown it should not be exposed. The best bonding will occur between two porcelain surfaces.
A 39-year-old member asked:

Can a dentist shave down my capped tooth and put a veneer over it?

9 doctor answers14 doctors weighed in
Dr. Jay Kansal
Dentistry 14 years experience
No: If you already have a "cap" or crown (what a cap is called in the dental profession) than the tooth should already be shaved down to accommodate that crown. In that case a veneer would not be possible as a veneer is like press on nail and only covers the front of a tooth. If you are doing this because you dont like the way your crown looks, you would need a new crown.
A 36-year-old member asked:

How do you whiten a porcelain veneer on your tooth?

10 doctor answers22 doctors weighed in
Dr. Kaveh Niknia
Dentistry 22 years experience
You Can't: A porcelain veneer is color stable, and unfortunately immune to conventional teeth whitening products. If there are coffee or tea stains, they can be polished, but only a new veneer, with a brighter porcelain base, will make it whiter.
