For how long does a caudal epidural steroid injection provide pain relief for compressed disks at l4/l5?

Dr. Robert Kent

Depends on the: Underlying pathology, disc rupture verse foraminal narrowing vs stenosis, which could all be related to collapsed disc. It should give you at least a couple weeks of pain relief, long enough to get through some physical therapy. Sometimes, if it is transient inflammation, the steroids can give long term relief, from a few months to resolving the pain. It just depends on the injury itself.

Epidural injection: You should take it easy the day of the injection. The steroid injection takes a few days to be effective.
