Sometimes: There are cases where some of the personalities may be aware of the others but, as a general rule, persons with dissociative identity disorder (the clinical name for mpd) aren't aware of the different personalities within their psyche. Similarly, they are often not aware of what they are doing when the different personalities are controlling their actions, which can often be very frightening!

A 40-year-old member asked:

Do people with multiple personality disorder know that they are suffering from it?

1 doctor answer4 doctors weighed in
Dr. Pamela Pappas
Psychiatry 42 years experience
In some ways: The central or personality or "alter" may be aware of the others, but some of the others may be unaware of the rest. All parts probably experience some suffering, but may not perceive the problem as one of "multiple personality" [actually now known as dissociative identity disorder]. Therefore, the answer to your question depends on which alter is in charge when you speak with the person.
A 30-year-old member asked:

Anyone with experience with someone with histrionic personality disorder?

2 doctor answers7 doctors weighed in
Dr. Pamela Pappas
Psychiatry 42 years experience
Yes: Psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals have experience with people who have histrionic personality disorder. Many other physicians encounter and work with them also, but are not the primary ones to treat this problem. Mental health professionals would be best suited to help such a person directly.
