Mitochondrial defect: Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy is a form of encephalomyopathy that is caused by dysfunctional mitochondrial. "encephalo-" refers to disease of brain. "myo" refers to muscle. "-pathy" means pathology/disease in general. Thus encephalomyopathies are diseases in which both brain and muscle are affected.
