Dr. Moez Khorsandi
Urology 27 years experience
Removal of prostate: Surgery for prostate cancer is called a radical prostatectomy. This includes entirely removing the prostate gland with its surrounding structures and then reconstructing the bladder to the urethra again. After surgery, no ostomy or external permanent bag is neccessary. Pelvic lymph nodes may or may not be removed at the same time depending on the clinical findings.

Dr. Mitchell Kamrava
Radiation Oncology 16 years experience
Many ways: Radiation is a highly effective treatment option for prostate cancer. There are many options which include: external beam radiation therapy with either photons or protons, brachytherapy with either low dose rate seeds or high dose rate brachytherapy, or stereotactic body radiation. You should see a radiation oncologist in consultation to have a discussion about these different options.

Can benign prostate diseases be prevented?

Dr. Howard Tay
Urology 31 years experience
BPH: BPH is usually an inherited trait although some studies have shown a diet high in red-meat and fat content (western diet) can increase the risk as well. The use of medication after the age of 50 such as Finasteride or Dutasteride can slow down bph. Check w your doctor.

Is the medical profession being overrun w/mediocrity? I just went to a new pcp was referred to a urologist for the prostate exam. Why waste my time?

Dr. Luis Villaplana
Internal Medicine 35 years experience
In my opinion: And my opinion only, our profession is overrun with bureaucracy, over regulation, administrative burdens and oversight that leads to the frustration i pick up in your statement. Also, seems everybody has an opinion, whether well educated or not. Tell you what, if hippa would allow, you should spend a day with a doctor. After you do, it may be easier for you to understand the crap we put up with.

Dr. Anthony Back
Medical Oncology 37 years experience
It's only for some: Provenge (sipuleucel-t) is used in a very specific clinical situation with prostate cancer--definitely not indicated for everyone. The best treatment depends on the stage and grade of the cancer.
Dr. William A Biermann
Medical Oncology 46 years experience
It is a complicated and very expensive treatment that has a small benefit for a very small group of patients. Most oncologist nationally use it very infrequently
