Silicone +/- saline: All implants currently used in general practice are composed of an outer silicone elastomer envelope (like a balloon). They are then either filled with silicone gel (with manufactures offering numerous and varied consistencies) or with saline. Silicone gel filled are currently most popular. Other implants form the past have been filled with other substances such as oil but are no longer available.

Many things: Trauma is usually obvious, fracturing the ribs or bruising the soft tissue in the area. Inflammation can occur without trauma. If there is a rash and you had chicken pox in the past, it could be shingles (herpes zoster). Sometimes tumors will involve the ribs and lead to fracture and pain. If pain does not improve with over the counter medication and time or is severe, see your primary doctor.

No but should: They don't have to do it if you refuse that portion of the exam but it is a normal part of a complete history and physical examination and a sign of a thorough physician.
