A 35-year-old female asked:

I am bipolar, i take lithium, i also have depression n fibro. can i take cymbolta with lithium. i will talk to my doc. but i a siciartrist opinion?

You can, but: It's very important that a psychiatrist follow you carefully if taking cymbalta, (duloxetine) because of your bipolar disorder. You should be okay as long as lithium levels are therapeutic -- the main worry with starting an antidepressant like Cymbalta (duloxetine) is possible mania or hypomania occurring. Most psychiatrists would be very careful with doing this, but it can certainly be done. Best wishes, .

I have used it in people with bipolar and fibromyalgia with mixed results & even some outstanding results. Start at lowest dose & gradually increase every 4-6weeks. Use lowest effective dose & involve family/loved ones to warn if signs/sx of mania begin to develop. Good luck.
